9/80 Work Schedule

Table of Contents

A 9/80 work schedule is an alternative one in which employees work for nine days in two weeks instead of ten days on a traditional nine-to-five, Monday-to-Friday schedule.

A 9/80 schedule is usually split into eight nine-hour days and a single eight-hour day, which translates to an additional day off every other week. This structure is often called a “compressed” schedule because employees still work 80 hours in total while working fewer days.

What Is a 9/80 Work Schedule?

A 9/80 schedule is a type of compressed workweek that allows employees to work the same 80 hours over two weeks, but in nine days instead of ten. Typically, employees work eight nine-hour days, one eight-hour day, and get every other Friday off. This setup offers added flexibility without reducing total work hours, making it popular among organizations seeking better work-life balance for their teams.

How a 9/80 Schedule Works

Here’s a common breakdown of a 9/80 schedule:

DayWeek 1Week 2
Monday9 hours9 hours
Tuesday9 hours9 hours
Wednesday9 hours9 hours
Thursday9 hours9 hours
Friday8 hoursOff
Total44 hrs36 hrs

Note: For payroll purposes, the final 4 hours of the first Friday typically count toward the second week.

Variations are also possible, for instance, shifting the eight-hour day to Week 2 or allowing employees to choose a different day off besides Friday.

Benefits of a 9/80 Schedule

1. Better Work-Life Balance
Employees gain two extra days off per month to handle personal responsibilities or simply recharge, leading to reduced stress and improved overall wellness.

2. Reduced Commuting
One less day of commuting every other week saves time, fuel, and vehicle wear and tear, especially valuable for those with long commutes.

3. Lower Absenteeism
With more built-in flexibility, employees are less likely to take unscheduled time off, helping improve attendance and consistency.

4. Higher Engagement & Productivity
Time off to recharge can lead to increased focus, better collaboration, and improved work output, reducing the risk of burnout and disengagement.

5. Talent Attraction & Retention
Offering flexible scheduling options like a 9/80 setup positions your company as forward-thinking and employee-centric, qualities that appeal to top talent.

6. Operational Flexibility
Organizations can stagger off-days by team or department to ensure full coverage while still providing flexibility to employees.

Efficient Time Tracking

To manage a 9/80 schedule effectively, it's essential to track hours accurately. Many HR and payroll systems offer built-in tools to simplify scheduling, logging, and compliance.
